Where you put your pool in your backyard matters as much as what it looks like. Placement affects sun exposure, privacy, house proximity, traffic flow, and how well the rest of your yard functions.
Think through your layout before finalizing any pool design. A pool in the wrong position — even a beautiful one — can frustrate you for years.
- Orient the pool to maximize sun exposure during peak swim hours (typically 12pm–6pm)
- Maintain 8–12 feet of clearance from the house for safety and visual balance
- Position pool relative to indoor spaces for natural sightlines and supervision
- Leave adequate space on at least two sides for decking and comfortable poolside use
- Consider existing trees: shade is welcome, but roots and debris are complications
- Plan traffic flow from the house to the pool — avoid crossing wet surfaces
